Adios Yellowstone: A Farewell to America's First National Park
Published on: | Author: Shana
It is always bittersweet to pack up the hiking boots and leave a place as magical as Yellowstone National Park. From the roaring geysers to the sprawling valleys filled with bison, this trip has been nothing short of spectacular. As I say "Adios Yellowstone," I want to look back at some of the most memorable trails, the unexpected wildlife encounters, and the sheer scale of America's first national park.
Top Highlights from the Trails
Yellowstone is massive, and trying to hike it all in one trip is impossible. However, the miles we did cover were packed with diverse landscapes. Whether we were navigating the steep incline of Avalanche Peak or enjoying the vibrant colors of the Grand Prismatic Spring overlook, every trailhead offered a new surprise.
- The Geyser Basins: You cannot visit Yellowstone without feeling the heat of the earth. Walking the boardwalks among bubbling mud pots and erupting geysers feels like stepping onto another planet.
- Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone: The sheer drop-offs and the thundering Lower Falls provided some of the most dramatic photography opportunities of the entire trip.
- Wildlife Spotting in Lamar Valley: Known as America's Serengeti, Lamar Valley did not disappoint. We kept a safe distance but were treated to incredible views of bison herds and a distant grizzly.
Final Thoughts & Tips for Future Hikers
If you are planning your own Yellowstone adventure, here are a few takeaways from my time on the trails:
- Start Early: The parking lots at popular trailheads fill up by 8:00 AM. Getting an alpine start not only guarantees parking but also increases your chances of spotting active wildlife.
- Always Carry Bear Spray: This is grizzly country. Carrying bear spray and knowing how to use it is non-negotiable on these trails.
- Prepare for Changing Weather: The elevation here means the weather can turn from sunny to freezing rain in a matter of minutes. Layers are your best friend.
Where to Next?
While it is hard to say goodbye to the geothermal wonders of Wyoming, the trail calls us elsewhere. Next up, we are heading towards the jagged peaks and alpine lakes of the Grand Tetons. Make sure to stay tuned for the next set of trail guides and elevation breakdowns!
