Ta-Ta Grand Tetons: Saying Goodbye to Wyoming's Majestic Peaks

Taking one last look at the iconic, jagged skyline of the Teton Range.

After a brief diversion through the warm deserts and red rocks of Northern Arizona, our journey brought us back to the towering, unmistakable skyline of Wyoming. But all good things must come to an end, and it is time to say "Ta-Ta" to Grand Teton National Park. Packing up the tent beneath these massive granite peaks always leaves me feeling a mix of exhaustion and profound gratitude.

The Unmatched Scale of the Teton Range

What makes the Grand Tetons so special is their abruptness. There are no rolling foothills to soften their visual impact; they simply explode out of the Jackson Hole valley, dominating the horizon from every angle.

During our time here, we explored everything from the historic barns to the icy waters of Phelps and Taggart Lakes. The trails here are demanding, but the reward of sitting by a perfectly still alpine lake while a moose forages in the shallows nearby is something you cannot find anywhere else.

Memories from the Trail

As we drive out of the park, a few moments stand out above the rest:

  • Wildlife Encounters: The Tetons are incredibly wild. From watching a herd of elk move through the morning mist to giving a wide berth to a black bear crossing the trail, the wildlife here demands your respect and awe.
  • The Alpenglow: Waking up at 5:00 AM in the freezing cold is entirely worth it when you see the first light of dawn hit the highest peaks, turning the gray granite into a glowing, vibrant pink.
  • Crisp Mountain Air: There is a specific smell to the pine forests in Wyoming—clean, sharp, and earthy. It is the kind of air that instantly clears your mind.

Until Next Time, Wyoming

Leaving the Tetons feels like leaving a piece of my heart behind in the mountains. But the trail map is still full of unmarked destinations. We are trading the dramatic peaks of Wyoming for the rolling hills and hidden trails of Idaho.
